Children, Young People and Families Capacity Building
VANL staff undertake capacity building with the Community and Voluntary Sector (CVS) to strengthen the support they provide to local children, young people, and families to improve their health, wellbeing and inclusion. VANL does this as outlined below.
Convening and supporting the North Lanarkshire CVS Children, Young People and Families Network to provide information-sharing; peer support; and to support CVS partnership working with the public sector through the North Lanarkshire Children’s Services Partnership; Health and Social Care North Lanarkshire; North Lanarkshire Partnership (NLP).
Supporting the CVS to strengthen their contributions to the following.
- Helping mothers breastfeed successfully with bespoke training from the Infant Mental Health Team and links with community midwives.
- Child protection, including training provided by VANL staff.
- Tackling poverty through:
- employability support
- money and welfare advice
- community food support.
- Children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
Encouraging young people to volunteer to support development of their skills and confidence and community engagement and contribution.
Supporting CVS participation in the Children’s Services Partnership (CSP) to support development and delivery of the Children’s Services Plan.
Achievements 2023-24
During 2023-24, HSCNL provided VANL with a grant of £30,000 to support children, young people and family capacity building work as outlined above. This funding was complemented by core funding from the Scottish Government and North Lanarkshire Council.
VANL staff supported the following work during 2023-24:
Convened 4 meetings of the Children, young People and Families Network involving 30 CVS organisations which supported work on the following issues:
Supported members with their applications to Phase 4 of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund (20 members were successful)
Supported members to liaise with schools and access other school-managed funding such as Pupil Equality Fund
Supported members to access training on issues such as Child Protection and mental health
Supported CVS contributions to the delivery of the NL Tackling Poverty Strategy
Supported CVS organisations to help families affected by child and family poverty
